Credit vs. Debit
What's the Difference?
Credit - Your transaction will be processed through the MasterCard network and you will usually (except for pay-at-the-pump gasoline transactions) need to sign a receipt. You will not receive a bill for your transaction later, however. The funds will be deducted directly from your checking account.
Debit - Your transaction will be processed through the ATM network and you will be required to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN). You will not have to sign a receipt. The funds will be deducted directly from your checking account.
What Should You Say?
Credit - Using your MasterCard Debit Card as a credit transaction will save you money. As long as funds are available in your checking account, you will not incur any fees from this type of transaction.
Debit - Use your MasterCard Debit Card as a debit transaction if you would like cash back at a merchant. Each time you use an ATM, it is a debit transaction. You may incur fees for this type of transaction. See your Debit Card disclosure statement for details.
